Yul who was named after popular Russian actor Yul Brynner by his father Pete Edochie, was raised both in Lagos and Enugu. He is the last of 6 children. Yul attended the University of Port Harcourt, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Dramatic Arts and got married to May Aligwe at age 22. The couple are blessed with 3 sons and a daughter.
