Court remands man for alleged rape of 11-year-old

An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, ordered the remand of a 35-year-old man, Deji Oke, in the correctional centre at Ado-Ekiti for alleged rape of a minor.

The defendant, whose address was not provided, is under trial for alleged rape.

The prosecutor, Insp. Olubu Apata, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Feb. 23 in Ado-Ekiti.

Apata said that the defendant defiled an 11-year-old girl.

He said the offence contravened Section 31 of the Child Rights Law of Ekiti State, 2012.

The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant in a correctional centre, pending issuance of legal advice from office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The plea of the defendant was not taken.

In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Adefumike Anoma noted that reports of rape and sexual assault on female children is now rampant.

Anoma added that the social problem demands for more urgent and proactive actions from all stakeholders involved in child care delivery.

She ordered that the defendant be remanded in the correctional facility, pending issuance of legal advice and adjourned the case until March 18 for mention.
