16 passengers escape being drowned in Rivers boat accident

 

At least, 16 persons were rescued on Wednesday when a passenger boat capsized in Kalio-ama river in the Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The boat, which was travelling from ATC in Okrika to Marine Base in Port Harcourt at about 1:30pm on Wednesday, had 22 passengers on board when the incident happened, even as it was learnt that some passengers had earlier disembarked at their destination.

A source said the incident, which took place at a point between the creeks of George-Ama and Kalio-Ama, was as a result of the rains, adding that the driver attributed it to refuse dumped in the river.

The eyewitness told newsmen that youths from Kalio-ama community raced to the scene and rescued the travellers, just as he called on boat drivers to be more careful during this rainy season.

He said, “We thank God that no life was lost. The accident took place around 1.30pm between the creeks of George-Ama and Kalio-Ama. We examine the driver; he claimed that the accident occurred as a result of refuse in the river.”

He advised people of the area and travellers to stop dumping refuse in the river in order to forestall accident on the waterways.
